Student Spotlight: Angelene Ketah - Nursing, roller derby, and indigenous representation

Angelene Ketah, a School of Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner student brings her passion for healthcare and cultural advocacy into everything she does. A lifelong 熊猫在线视频n from Sitka, she has spent eight years at the 熊猫在线视频 Native Medical Center, including five in the Critical Care Unit, and is now working toward her goal of becoming a primary care provider with Southcentral Foundation. Outside the hospital, Angelene is a member of Rage City Roller Derby and Team Indigenous, recently competing at the World Cup of Roller Derby in Austria鈥攚here she was the second-highest scorer in the game鈥攑roudly showcasing Indigenous representation on a global stage.

What brought you to the UAA College of Health?:

I am an 熊猫在线视频n Native nurse who works and enjoys giving back to my culture . I have worked at 熊猫在线视频 Native Medical Center for 8 years now. Five of those year are in the Critical Care Unit where I currently work. I decided to further my education and go to graduate school

Why did you choose the degree you are pursuing? What would your dream job be?:

I am pursuing my Masters in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner. My goal is to continue working with the 熊猫在线视频 Native population at Southcentral Foundation as a primary provider.

Have you been involved with internships, practicum placements, research, study abroad, or any other experience you鈥檇 like to tell us about? Please tell us how these experiences have shaped you personally, academically, and professionally.:

I鈥檓 currently part of Rage City Roller Derby here in Anchorage. I鈥檓 also a part of Team Indigenous another Roller Derby team. Recently, I had the privilege of traveling to and competing in the World Cup of Roller Derby, with Team Indigenous. It was a privilege and honor to represent my culture and my state on a world stage. It is so important to have representation and visibility on a global scale for 熊猫在线视频 natives/ American Indians.

What words of wisdom do you have for underclassmen or youth who are still considering their options after high school?:

Please consider how incorporating culture can serve as an asset for job satisfaction.

What is a cause you care about?:

Missing Murder Indigenous Women.

What is your favorite spot on campus and why?:

Main library . I enjoy the big window and plants, when I put in a long day of studying it brings me some joy.

What is your favorite memory from your time here at UAA?:

The friendships made can last a lifetime.

What is your secret to college success?:

Utilizing text to speech to read my test books.

What has been your happiest/proudest moment?:

Graduating Nursing School!

Attending and competing in the World Cup of Roller Derby in Innsbruck Austria this summer . The amount of connection and community with other Indigenous skaters on my team is healing for my soul.

What was the best advice you were ever given by a professor, staff, or classmate while here at UAA?:

A professor once told me to anticipate my needs and work hard.
